Practical file guides

A few settings. A lot less guesswork.

Short guides for upload limits, image dimensions, file formats, metadata, and reviewing a finished PDF. Read what you need, then try the tool.

Why these guides are part of the site

File tools are easy to misuse when the interface is the only explanation. These guides cover the tradeoffs behind the controls so you can decide whether to resize, crop, compress or convert before changing a file. They also explain what a tool cannot do—for example, converting a JPG to PNG cannot restore detail already lost to JPG compression, and removing EXIF metadata does not hide information that is visibly printed in the image.

Each guide links back to the relevant Rare Frequency Works utility. The tools are for doing the work; the guides are for understanding the choice.
