Ratios help you resize without guessing or stretching content.
A ratio such as 16:9 says how width relates to height. It does not tell you how many pixels are in the file. 1920×1080 and 1280×720 are both 16:9, but the first contains more pixels.
Use the calculator when you need to preserve a shape while changing dimensions. If you know one side and the desired ratio, you can calculate a matching second side instead of stretching the image.
Simplifying 1920:1080 to 16:9 makes it easier to compare dimensions from different sources. A matching simplified ratio means the shapes are equivalent even when the pixel counts differ.
If the destination requires a different ratio, decide whether to crop, add padding or accept a different composition. Changing both dimensions without considering the ratio can distort the image.
