Which format should I use?

JPG works almost everywhere and is ideal for photographs. PNG is useful for graphics, screenshots, and transparency. WebP can provide smaller files while keeping strong image quality. AVIF can be even smaller in browsers that support AVIF export. GIF and BMP can be opened as source images in modern browsers; animated GIFs convert as a still frame.

What happens to transparency?

PNG and WebP can preserve transparent areas. JPG cannot; transparent pixels are placed on a white background during JPG conversion.
